During the production of Turtle Power, we amassed an incredible collection of material including personal archives from Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, much of which had never been seen and SO much of which we were simply unable to include in the movie.
In fact, we were still shooting May 2014, literally adding shots while the doc was being delivered to Paramount because we HAD to include Kevin and Pete’s emotional first face to face meeting in decades, which became the ending of that movie…
…and the beginning of this next one.
After we gained Pete and Kevin’s trust and friendship, they found themselves sharing stories they’ve seldom shared before, opening up about the disorienting effects of sudden, wild success back in the 80s, the shocking explosion of the Turtles into a pop culture phenomenon and their creative separation.
But then everybody we interviewed after them did the same thing. Artists, creators, contributors and lifelong fans who grew up to work with these crazy characters they loved were all giving us in-depth interviews with so much gold that it was hard to believe, pushing us out beyond our wildest expectations in production time, in production spend and in the collection of archives, well past anything we’d imagined.

This time, we’re showing off as much of our TMNT treasure trove as possible, taking fans on a Definitive Deep Dive through the ten year journey it took to make this movie, starting with a new look at that night in Dover with the crazy drawing that started it all and going right up to IDW and Rise and this time, we’re going deep into the corners, testing the edges of this incredible franchise and finding the bits and pieces that make the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so adaptable, so unique and meaningful to so many.

Our Own Mutations
TMNT has always been about adapting and changing. Even for us! Prolonged contact with the ooze has led to our own mutations.
Alternate TMNT Characters: In early 1987, Playmates Toys adapted Kevin and Peter’s black and white comic book into a toy line and a cartoon, which we all know. However, during early development toy designers tested some wild ideas, characters, and settings for new toys. Did you know Shredder’s henchmen were originally to be human characters with wacky actions and gross-out weapons? Then Peter convinced them to try doing mutant animals instead. Without that input, the TMNT toy line, cartoon and all the merchandise across the franchise and into the future would have been radically different. For the first time ever, these alternate “original” universe characters will be made into toys by toymaster/sculptor Steve Varner.
